Where Do Pearls Come From?

Pearls form inside mollusks, most commonly oysters and mussels, as a direct response to an irritant that gets inside the shell. The mollusk can't remove the irritant, so it coats it, layer by layer, in the same substance that lines its own shell. That substance is nacre, and it's what pearls are actually made of.
How the Process Actually Works
When something, a parasite, a piece of grit, or in cultured pearls a deliberately inserted bead or tissue graft, lodges inside a mollusk's soft tissue, the animal's defense mechanism kicks in. It secretes nacre around the irritant in thin, concentric layers, the same way it would coat the inside of its own shell to keep it smooth. Over months or years, those layers build up into a solid, rounded pearl. The iridescent shine associated with pearls comes from the way light interacts with these microscopically thin, stacked layers of nacre.
Natural Pearls
A natural pearl forms without any human involvement at all. The irritant enters the mollusk by chance, and the whole process happens in the wild with no intervention. Because it depends entirely on chance, natural pearls are extremely rare, and the vast majority of pearls sold today, including in fine jewellery, are not natural in this strict sense.
Cultured Pearls
Cultured pearls form the same biological way, through nacre being layered around an irritant, but the irritant is introduced deliberately by a pearl farmer, either as a small bead or a piece of tissue. From that point forward, the mollusk does the same work it would do with a natural irritant, and the pearl grows the same way. The distinction is entirely about how the process started, not how it happened once it did. Nearly all pearls in jewellery today are cultured for this reason.
Saltwater and Freshwater Pearls
Pearls form in both saltwater and freshwater mollusks, and the two produce noticeably different results. Saltwater varieties, including Akoya, South Sea, and Tahitian pearls, tend to have thinner nacre layers built over longer growing periods, which typically produces a more uniform, higher-shine surface. Freshwater pearls, grown mainly in mussels, often produce multiple pearls per shell and tend to have thicker nacre relative to their size, giving them a slightly different luster and a wider range of natural shapes.
What Determines Pearl Quality
Luster, the way light reflects and glows from the surface, is the single biggest factor in how a pearl looks and is generally considered the most important quality marker. Surface smoothness, consistent shape, and matching color across a strand also affect quality and value. Thicker, more evenly built nacre generally produces both better luster and better durability over time, since nacre is what protects the pearl from everyday wear.
