How Much Does It Cost to Resize a Ring?

October 20, 2026

Simple ring resizing may start around CAD 50. The final cost depends on the ring’s material, how much the size needs to change, and the complexity of the setting. Larger adjustments or intricate work can cost substantially more. We’ll inspect your ring and confirm a quote before proceeding.

Sizing up usually costs more than sizing down because additional metal may be needed. Platinum, wide bands and intricate stone settings can also require more specialised work.

Turnaround depends on the work involved and our current studio schedule. Straightforward adjustments may be quicker, while complex work can take longer. We’ll discuss an estimated timeframe after inspecting your ring. If you have a particular date in mind, let us know so we can confirm what is realistic.

If your ring has been spinning on your finger, or pinching by the end of the day, there’s nothing to worry about cause it's one of the most common fixes there is.

What does ring resizing cost by metal?

Different materials and ring designs call for different work. These are factors we consider when preparing your quote, rather than fixed prices:

  • Sterling silver: the band’s width, condition and any stone settings affect the work required.
  • Gold, sizing down: removing metal is often more straightforward, but the design and any repairs needed still affect the cost.
  • Gold, sizing up: additional metal, its purity and the amount needed all contribute to the quote.
  • Platinum: higher working temperatures and specialised equipment can make resizing more involved.
  • Larger size changes, eternity bands and heavily engraved rings: feasibility and cost need to be assessed individually.

The starting price is a guide, not a quote or an upper limit. Material prices, the ring’s condition and the labour involved can change the final cost. Bring your ring in so we can assess it and confirm a quote before any work begins.

Can every ring be resized?

Most gold, silver and platinum rings can, but there are a few exceptions.

Eternity bands, the ones with stones all the way around, can only be adjusted a little, because the stones sit where the cut would need to be.

Rings made of very hard materials such as tungsten carbide usually can’t be resized at all.

If you're not sure what yours is made of, just ask us, and we'll be happy to help. You can book a consultation here anytime.

How many sizes can a ring be changed?

A change of one to two sizes is often possible, but the ring’s construction and stone settings determine what is safe. Larger changes may need extra metal, reshaping or a different approach, so we assess each ring before recommending the work.

For a large change, a jeweller may suggest remaking the ring instead. At José & Co, we offer redesigns, where we take what's already there and turn it into something you’ll love to wear.

How do I know my ring size?

The easiest way is to let a jeweller measure your finger. It takes about a minute with a ring sizer, and there's no guesswork.

If you'd rather measure at home, do it when your hands are warm and toward the end of the day, since fingers change size with temperature and time of day.

Here's one way to do it: cut a thin strip of paper or a piece of string, wrap it around your finger, and mark the spot where it overlaps. Then measure that length in millimetres with a ruler and match the number to a ring sizing conversion chart.

Alternatively, find a ring that already fits you well, measure its inside diameter in millimetres, and compare the result to a sizing chart.

Frequently asked questions

Why does sizing up cost more than sizing down?

Sizing down simply removes a small section of the band. Sizing up means adding metal, and that metal is bought at the current gold price. Each extra size adds a bit more labour and material, and a wide or detailed band needs more of both.

Can you resize a ring with diamonds all the way around?

Usually only a little. The stones are set around the whole band, so there isn't much room to cut and rejoin it. Bring it in, and we can tell you whether a small adjustment is possible or whether the ring would be better remade.

Is platinum more expensive to resize than gold?

Often, yes. Platinum needs higher heat and specialized equipment, which can make the work more involved than resizing gold. The final cost depends on the ring and the adjustment needed; we’ll confirm a quote after inspecting it.

Ring too tight, too loose, or not quite right anymore? Bring it to our store in South Surrey, and we'll take a good look and tell you what it needs.
